Dr. Hossam Omar, the founder and Chairman of Middle East Chemicals (MEC), United Company of Pharmacists (UCP), and United Company for Trading and Distribution (UCTD), began his own private business when pharmacists in Egypt were suffering due to a lack of supplies. The market dynamics at the time were driven by each pharmaceutical company delivering the needs of the pharmacies throughout the country from their individual factories located in Cairo and Alexandria. Consequently, pharmacy outlets had to wait for more than a month and even longer, in rural areas to receive their orders. Additionally, for pickup, customers had to call the state-owned pharmaceutical distribution centers in person and wait in enormous queues for their turn to collect their needs if they were accessible.
